Welcome to Storm Surge!

Storm Surge formed in the spring of 2013 by a group of concerned citizens in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts in response to the devastating coastal erosion and damage to residences that occurred on Plum Island the winter before. The group provides science-based presentations on the causes, effects and future of climate change affecting Newburyport and surrounding areas and produces classroom teaching resources for local schools.

The 2021 Winter Newsletter is here. Storm Surge has been busy during the Fall-Winter season and there is lots of news.

Missed Our March 3 Event?

Dr. Rob Young of Western Carolina University made his presentation about the Retreat Plan for North Topsail Island, a barrier island near Wilmington, NC. The Zoom meeting was attended by many in the Newburyport community and Dr. Young answered questions following the presentation. The presentation video shows how detailed analysis of critical scientific and economic data can be integrated to plan for climate change on a coastal community similar to ours.  The full report can be viewed here.

Newburyport Resiliency Plan

In our last newsletter we announced the publication of the  “Newburyport Climate Resiliency Plan” on the City’s website. The  full report can be read here.

The City held an online presentation of the report and released a video of the meeting and the presentation slides.

Grant Results in Three School Presentations

Storm Surge won a grant at the end of 2019 from New England Biolabs to present in-school programs about climate change and its local impacts. Our group was prepared to engage students in Newburyport school classrooms until the Covid pandemic forced us to change our plans. The result—three presentations that merge climate science and local environmental concerns for use by educators and our community.

Storms, Flooding, Evacuation – Be Prepared

Storm Surge created a “Be Prepared” Information Sheet to help us get ready for emergency events. The one-page Sheet provides phone numbers for local emergency and medical contacts, a list of supplies important for you to have on hand, and ways to plan for emergency evacuation, including what to bring with you. There is a Sheet for Newburyport and another for the North Shore, applicable to both residents and business owners.
