Welcome to Storm Surge

Since 2013 our purpose has been to educate our community through science-based presentations by experts on causes and possible future effects of climate change that will affect the people and infrastructure of Newburyport and surrounding areas. In addition we are providing grant-funded classroom teaching resources on these topics to regional schools.

Plan to Attend our Speakers Series

To support the City’s efforts to increase awareness about its Climate Resiliency Plan, Storm Surge is developing Towards a Resilient Newburyport, a series of programs focused on issues raised in the Plan. There will be seven presentations, scheduled for the last Tuesday of each month, May through November. Please save these dates on your calendar and stay tuned for further details:

May 25, June 29, July 27, August 31, September 28, October 26, November 30.

We are partnering with the Parks Department this summer for outdoor, in-person programs at Cashman Park. In the fall we hope to move indoors to the Senior Community Center.

In order to comply with State COVID mandates, all participants need to register for each event. Please click here to register for the May 25th presentation.

We would love more help the day of each program. This may include helping set up and take down, cleaning up, or helping us with the audio equipment or cameras.

Newburyport Resiliency Plan

In our last newsletter we announced the publication of the “Newburyport Climate Resiliency Plan” on the City’s website. The full report can be read here.

The City held an online presentation of the report and released a video of the meeting and the presentation slides.

Grant Results in Three School Presentations

Storm Surge won a grant at the end of 2019 from New England Biolabs to present in-school programs about climate change and its local impacts. Our group was prepared to engage students in Newburyport school classrooms until the Covid pandemic forced us to change our plans. The result—these three presentations that merge climate science and local environmental concerns for use by educators and our community.

Storms, Flooding, Evacuation – Be Prepared

Storm Surge created a “Be Prepared” Information Sheet to help us get ready for emergency events. The one-page Sheet provides phone numbers for local emergency and medical contacts, a list of supplies important for you to have on hand, and ways to plan for emergency evacuation, including what to bring with you. There is a Sheet for Newburyport and another for the North Shore, applicable to both residents and business owners.
