King Tides: A Glimpse into Our Future
Become a Citizen Scientist! Help Document High Tides for the April 2025 King Tide
What Are King Tides?
On April 27, 2025, a New Moon Supermoon—the closest of the year at 221,917 miles (357,141 km) from Earth—will occur. Beginning April 28, a three-day period of extreme high and low tides known as Perigean Spring Tides (or King Tides) will follow. These exceptionally high tides happen when a full or new moon aligns with the moon’s closest approach to Earth. While natural, King Tides offer a glimpse into future sea level rise driven by climate change.
